Behaviour is a communication tool. A way of connecting in relationships, the way we respond and the way we navigate our world. Your behaviour is an indicator and reflection of your internal world, a peaceful, calm mind and emotional state, shows up as considered, relaxed behaviours. A chaotic, anxious internal world, projects as conflict and stress.
In this blog we will look at behaviour through the lens of EmotionMind Dynamic and DISCplus.Health when stress, anxiety, depression or burnout are overwhelming you.
EmotionMind Dynamic sees behaviour as the outward expression of the internal operating system, including emotions, thoughts, experiences, perceptions, expectations, self perception and beliefs.
DISCplus.Health is a tool to help people understand their own behaviour, how they adapt behaviours to suit their environment and what the risks of prolonged behaviour shifting is to their wellbeing.
During periods of anxiety, depression and burnout, people shift their behaviours to cope, to feel in control, and to hie what is really going on, often involuntarily. These new behaviours become a necessity to feel like you are holding yourself together. So many clients feel out of control. They can see the behaviours are causing arguments, the impatience with their children, withdrawal, frustrations at work but the need to control the emotional turmoil within is too much.
Emotional repression and suppression are two reasons for coping or managing symptoms. Whether you have learned to suppress emotions or have developed the default repression of emotions, your emotional vessel eventually fills up and filling activating your nervous system, filling your head with irrational thoughts and the need to control the emotions threatening to escape. You feel the urge to control the emotions and stop them from showing.
Behaviour is your control mechanism.
Behaviour analysis
EmotionMind Dynamic has identified 7 types of behaviour management systems that people who are burning out, living with anxiety or depression. Our Behaviour analysis will help you understand the behaviours you use during times of high stress. We have identified nearly 200 different behaviours

C.O.P.E (Chosen Outlet for Powerful Emotions) versus Manage
When people are in C.O.P.E. mode, these behaviours often show up in a chaotic, in the moment fashion. They can be implemented as often as every 10 minutes to suppress the emotions.
Managing is where people think they are doing ok, but they need to attend the gym run swim, yoga, or whatever 5, 6, 7 times a week to ‘get out of their own head’. Even though they are doing healthy activities, the “NEED” to do is the driver and it is unhealthy, if they are injured and cannot do the activity the stress, burnout, guilt shame, or whatever emotion they are running from comes back.
Need Versus Choice – This is the key to healthy versus unhealthy behaviours, if you NEED to do it to destress, for control, relief or to feel a sense of power, it is unhealthy. The power lies in choice, choosing to or not to do something.
DISCplus.Health uses an assessment to identify your behaviour profile, D – Direct, I – Inspiring, S – Supportive, C – Conscientious. It identifies your internal profile that has been set by the age of seven or eight years old, this is your natural profile. It also identifies the behaviours you are implementing when you are at work, with friends, or in social situations. It is common for people to shift behaviours from internal to external, but balance is key.
Ideally the amount of behaviour shifting is minimum, the more you shift and prolonged behaviour shifting, causes tension and it can lead to health issues. DISCplus.Health also highlights the adaptability of the person. In my experience, adapting has varying degrees of effects, for those that choose to adapt, enjoy the process and are in control of adapting, it reduces the tension. For those who have been raised to adapt to meet the needs of others, feel they have to hide their natural self or haven’t realised they are adapting so much it raises the tension.
The insights provided by DISCplus.Health are invaluable, clients are often surprised by how accurate they are. We use this at the start of the process, to help clients to start recognising who they truly are and make decisions about continuing to adapt. We also make sure to learn about the persons backstory, their values and beliefs so that we can support them to be more authentic, especially after completing EmotionMInd Dynamic, people often have minimised themselves and have forgotten their strengths, this helps them see and be.
If you have noticed you are adapting, people pleasing, lack boundaries and are ready to be yourself, lets start with a DISCplus,Health assessment.
